Case
Case refers to what covers a hardcover book. It is made of
board that is wrapped with some material. That material may
be paper that is printed (printed casewrap), Kivar or a B-grade
cloth.
Case stamping
See stamping
Casewrap
In a hardcover book, a casewrap does just that- it wraps the
case. In other words, it is the material that is glued to
the boards on a hardcover book. It can be paper that is printed,
or another material. Note: Technically every hardcover book
has a casewrap. You generally only use the terms if it is
a printed wrap.
Cover
A cover typically refers to what is on the outside of a paperbound
book. Sometimes you will hear the outside of a hardcover also
referred to as a cover. In either case, it is what is on the
outside of the text. Most paperbacks are 10 pt. stock. Budget
Note: 90% of what is on your bookshelf has a 10 pt cover.
Heavier cover stock is rarely needed and only adds to your
cost.
Endpaper
Also referred to as "ends" or "endleaves".
A folded sheet of paper one half of which is pasted to the
inside of either the front or back case of a book and the
other half to the inside edge of the first (or last) page
of the book. Endpapers are typically a different stock (paper)
that the text. 80# offset is standard. And exception to this
is a self ended book which means that the endleaves are part
of the first and last signatures of the book and are therefore
all the same stock.
Finishing
Finishing refers to what happens to a printed piece after
it is printed (i.e. finished). Often this refers to a final
coating on a jacket (film lamination for example) or an insert.
Some finishing can be done in line when a book prints, but
mostly it refers to offline operations.
Flat back
A hardcover binding where the spine is constructed with a
board in it so that it appears "flat". Most standard
32 page children's' picture books have flatbacks. Budget Note:
There is an up charge for flat backs with most printers.
FOB
A freight term meaning "Free On Board". A job is
FOB if it is completed and on pallets (boards) at the printer's
location. In other words, no freight is in the price.
